Traffic chaos in Dublin city centre as Luas works cement mixer breaks down and Port Tunnel closed
THOUSANDS of people were caught up in traffic mayhem this evening as the country’s main thoroughfare was closed to traffic.
Chaotic scenes ensued as buses and cars were diverted from O’Connell street during rush hour traffic tonight.
A cement mixer working on the new Luas system caused mayhem on O’Connell street at teatime after it broke down on the road.
Thousands of frustrated bus passengers jumped off their vehicles during the warmest day of the year.
The problem was further compounded as an incident saw the Port Tunnel closed in both directions.
The HGV ban was lifted in the city centre as a result as emergency services dealt with the incident.
Dublin Bus has advised passengers to expect heavy delays on southbound routes.
The port tunnel was reopened shortly before 8pm this evening.
