A Border town has outlawed the use of skateboards by children in the town centre -- as a public safety precaution.
Monaghan Town Council decided on the ban yesterday after complaints aired at a meeting over fears among elderly people about the likelihood of injuries being sustained by "high-speed skateboard addicts".
The ban will apply to an area known as the Diamond Plaza in the town centre.
A council spokesman said: "Bylaws are being introduced to ensure the ban is strictly enforced."
He added that another out-of-town centre will be exempted "so that young people can still use their skateboards".
