Torched memorial to Gerry is lovingly restored by Melanie
IT caused heartbreak for his loved ones when the bench erected in memory of the late Gerry Ryan was torched.
But the memorial placed in one of RTE star Mr Ryan's favourite spots to sit and spend time, Dublin 4's Herbert Park, has this week been lovingly restored.
It was one of a number of benches set ablaze by vandals who ran rampage in the park in January.
Along with destroying the bench, it is suspected the vandals also stole a plaque placed by his partner Melanie Verwoerd, the former boss of Unicef Ireland who began seeing Mr Ryan in 2008.
The plaque has also been replaced and the inscription has not changed.
It reads: "For Gerry. Seasons may change winter to spring but I love you till the end of time. Melanie."
The quotation is a line from a song in 'Moulin Rouge', a film which he loved.
Ms Verwoerd discovered the RTE presenter's body after he died in his Leeson Street apartment.
She has spoken of how she and Mr Ryan enjoyed walks in Herbert Park, particularly in spring when the cherry blossoms came into bloom.
