Top gardai to consider probe
SENIOR garda officers are to study an internal report on the Trevor Sargent controversy before deciding whether an investigation is warranted. A detailed report setting out the circumstances surrounding the representations made to gardai in Balbriggan by the former junior minister was sought yesterday by Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy.
He asked the officer in charge of the Dublin north division, Chief Supt Gerry Phillips, to prepare the report urgently after he learned about the representations yesterday morning.
The chief's report is expected to set out the sequence of events and also focus on the exchange of correspondence between local officers in Balbriggan and Mr Sargent.
Copies of the correspondence will also be included in the report.
