Ireland’s chief bankers were paid an average of €1.4 million last year, with bonuses above caps that have been set for next year, according to the European Union banking regulator.

The country’s highest-paid bankers had an average bonus-to-salary ratio of 235 per cent, according to a survey of EU finance workers who earn above €1 million per year.

The European Banking Authority carried out the survey.

Banker bonuses - that exceed twice their fixed pay - have been outlawed by the EU since February.

The rules will take effect next year.

The EBA said any banker paid more than €500,000 should be covered by the new rules capping bonuses.
