Top award for 'Independent' writer
Irish Independent journalist Gemma O'Doherty (right) won the consumer print prize last night at the 2011 GSK Irish Media Awards.
Ms O'Doherty was praised for her "thoroughly researched work", especially an article headed "Why yet another cancer 'miracle', really is a cause for hope this time". It landed the top prize in the keenly contested consumer print category.
Senior features writer with the Irish Independent, she received €750 and a specially commissioned trophy.
Other winners included Gary Culliton, of the 'Irish Medical Times', who won the health journalist of the year award.
He was honoured for his work in highlighting the challenges facing the Coalition and the commitments the parties made while in opposition.
