DENSE fog and accidents caused massive traffic delays on the M50 this morning.

Poor visibility as well as three separate collisions around the Blanchardstown and Lucan junctions caused a headache for Monday morning rush-hour commuters.

AA Roadwatch said the first accident happened about 8.15am between two cars in the southbound lane of the motorway near the toll area at Junction 7.

“This has slowed traffic in the area to a crawl,” said an AA spokesperson.

“A separate accident at around 8.45am before Junction 6 Blanchardstown between three cars has also brought traffic to a near standstill,” the spokesperson added.

To make matters worse, a third accident, this time in the northbound lane after Junction 6 Blanchardstown, happened shortly after 9am, bringing traffic to a crawl.

Traffic monitors in AA said it was difficult to assess the situation because its cameras could not send good images in the fog.

“We don’t know how bad these accidents are because the visibility is so low,” said the AA spokesperson.

Gardai described the accidents as minor in nature, with no reports of serious injuries.
