Thousands of ESB customers experienced a 'major power fault' in Dublin this evening.

Some 3,371 homes and businesses were without power shortly before 5pm, as a result of a fault at the Inchicore North station.

Power was restored to all affected areas before 6.30pm this evening.

Earlier, ESB apologised to customers in the Ballyfermot area of west Dublin as crews worked to restore power.

"We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible," ESB said on its Power Check website.

Businesses in the Chapelizod Industrial estate, Ballyfermot College of Further Education and the main street of Ballyfermot were all without power.

Streets affected included Decies Road, Lally Road, Landahn Road, Muskerry Road, O'Hogan Road, Sarsfield Road and St Lawrence Road.
