Thousands mourn hero bus driver

HE died saving lives...and last night the children who were on the bus when heroic driver Eugene McGreevy lost his life were amongst the 1,000 plus mourners who turned out to pay their respects.

Eugene's cousin President Mary McAleese joined his sisters Nuala and Mary at the parish church in Drumlion, Co Roscommon, along with colleagues, neighbours and schoolchildren.

They paid tribute to the first school bus driver to lose his life in the line of duty on Irish roads.

The children from Carrick-on-Shannon Community School who were on that fateful bus journey lined the quiet country road as the funeral cortege arrived at the church.

Bus drivers and other CIE colleagues also formed a guard of honour.

CIE Chairman John Lynch was amongst the mourners.

Eugene died last Wednesday when the school bus he was driving with 26 students on board was involved in a collision near the village of Hillstreet, Co Roscommon. He will be laid to rest in Ardcarne Cemetery today following 12 o'clock Mass.
