A third person has died following an accident between a car and a motorcycle.

James O'Brien, 85, was driving with his wife Betty when their car collided with the bike near Athy, Co Kildare, on Friday.

Mrs O'Brien, 81, from Kilkea, Castledermot, Co Kildare, and 29-year-old John Doyle, from Kilberry, Athy, died on the day of the accident.

Five people were killed on the roads over the bank holiday weekend.

Gardai have renewed calls for all road users to take extra care while travelling and for motorists to slow down.

Officers investigating the cause of the accident appealed for anyone who was on the link road from Athy to the M9 between 1.30pm and 3pm on Friday and who witnessed the crash to come forward.

Mr Doyle was one of two motorcyclists killed after a woman in her 50s, originally from the UK but living in the Dunmanway area in Co Cork, was killed after attending a Harley Davidson festival in Kerry.
