Thieves threaten future of famous crib

One of the country's best-loved nativity scenes may no longer be erected at future Christmases owing to the theft of its centrepiece for a second year running.

The Baby Jesus from a crib erected at the Lough in Cork city every year is missing again. Cork City Council says it is to review whether to continue erecting the much-loved crib at the Lough after the theft. Last year teenage thieves walked across the frozen Lough to reach the crib before making off with the statue. This year, a digger was used to create a three-foot gap between the walkway and the ice around the perimeter of the lake. However, vandals still succeeded in getting across the icy surface and making off with the statue.
