Eimear Rabbitte

AN opportunistic thief is targeting racegoers at Cheltenham with a number of Irish racing fans losing their winnings.

People are being warned to be vigilant after substantial amounts of cash were stolen from several Cheltenham hotel rooms. More than €5,000 was taken from three separate bedrooms in a Cotswolds hotel, with around five elderly men falling victim to an opportunistic thief.

With nearly 300,000 people expected to pass through the turnstiles by the end of the festival today, punters are being warned to be wary. A string of thefts, counterfeit money, pick-pocketing and assault were among the crimes reported at the UK racecourse this week.

While the nationalities of all the victims have not yet been confirmed, Irish victims have been among those who have experienced difficulty.

Up to 15,000 Irish race-goers are expected to splash the cash there this week.
