JOYCE McCahill from Ballintubber, Co Roscommon, died on January 12, 2021, in Fearna Manor Nursing Home in Castlerea. She was 79.

They had an outbreak in the nursing home over Christmas and she tested positive in the first week in January,” her granddaughter Colleen McCahill (34) said. “She just went downhill from there really."

Colleen said the family were not able to be with Joyce when she passed, and her coffin had to be closed in the funeral home.

Joyce’s daughters in England were not able to attend the funeral:

“Her other daughters were in England, so it was literally just my mum and my dad and our family here. Obviously, they couldn’t get over because they would have had to isolate,” said Colleen.

Ms McCahill worked as a cleaner as a young woman. She enjoyed knitting, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She lived in the nursing home with her husband James who suffered from dementia. James sadly passed away in January this year, aged 82. The couple were married for 60 years.

Colleen said it was very difficult for her granddad, who seemed to be aware that he had lost someone dear to him. Ms McCahill is survived by her four children, Debbie, Lesley, Brenda and Steven.
