'They cost me €1,000'

A CUSTOMER who engaged debt management company Dunne & Maxwell to handle her debt repayments ended up €1,000 worse off with nothing to show for it.

The mother of one told the Irish Independent she had engaged the company -- which has since been shut down by the Central Bank -- to manage negotiations and repayments to a lender on her behalf.

She handed over €1,000 to them but four months later she was contacted by debt collectors for the lender to say no money had been received.

The firm repeatedly fobbed her off when she complained and said her payments were set-up costs.

She warned other cash-strapped householders to beware of getting burned by such companies.
