The supermarket giant said that a contamination issue involving listeria monocytogenes was discovered at one of its factories

The 100g garlic and herb butter log, which is produced in a factory in Westmeath has been ordered out of shops across the country as a precautionary measure, according to a spokeswoman.

The bacteria can cause food poisoning particularly for pregnant women, babies and people vulnerable immune systems.

“Whilst we have no evidence to suggest these Tesco products have been contaminated, we have recalled the product as a precautionary measure,” the spokeswoman said.

Customers are being advised to bring the product back to the store.

“We are asking customers who have purchased affected products to return it to store for a full refund,” she added.

The news comes after nine of the flavoured butters were also recalled by the chain in the UK.
