A teenager has died and three other people were injured after an horrific car crash in north Cork.

The 17-year-old boy suffered fatal injuries when it apparently lost control and collided with a ditch on the Mallow-Lisgriffin Road shortly after 4pm yesterday.

No other vehicle is understood to have been involved.

The accident occurred less than 2km from Mallow General Hospital.

Paramedics were on the scene within minutes but were unable to stabilise the teen's condition.

He was pronounced dead before he could be transferred to hospital.

Three other occupants of the car suffered multiple injuries and were rushed to hospital.

It is understood that none of the injuries involved are life-threatening.

Gardai cordoned off the accident scene to allow for a technical examination by forensic experts.

Mallow Gardai have also appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the accident or the movements of the car involved before the collision to contact them.

The accident occurred just 48 hours after a 27-year-old motorcylist died after an accident on the South Link Road in Cork.

The biker collided with a crash barrier and was catapulted over onto the opposite carriageway.

Gardai appealed for the driver of a dark-coloured BMW car to contact them.

The man made contact with Gardai and will now make a formal statement about what he saw.
