A TEENAGE girl has died Cork City in an horrific accident involving an ice sled.

14-year-old Aoife Downey lost her brave fight for life after sustaining serious head injuries when the sled on which she was travelling ploughed head-on into a tree.

The accident occurred near Frankfield Golf Club in a southside suburb of Cork city as a group of teens were apparently playing with a home-made sled at lunchtime yesterday.

Their sled apparently built up substantial speed as it slid down a steep hill.

It is understood that five teens were on the sled -- and two managed to jump off as the sled reached the bottom of the hill.

Three teens were unable to jump off and remained on the sled as it powered across the bottom of the hill and ploughed into a large tree.

Ms Downey suffered horrific injuries in the accident and died later at Cork University Hospital. Two teenage boys were being treated for their injuries.

The scene was cordoned-off as gardai described the incident as "a terrible tragedy".
