Teen in intensive care after being shot in back

A 16-year-old boy remained in intensive care last night after being shot in the back outside a neighbour's house.

Gardai have not yet established a motive for the attack and are trying to establish if the victim, Jason Flaherty, right, was the intended target.

The teenager was shot yards from his own home at Whitestown Drive, in Mulhuddart, Dublin, shortly before 11pm on Monday.

According to the victim's mother, Dolores, Jason was talking with a friend outside the two-storey house when a car containing a number of people pulled up in front of them.

"Jason said he saw a young lad with a hood pulled tight down over his head and he pointed a gun at him, so he ran back into the house but the guy fired it just as he was passing the door," she said.

The teenager was rushed to the nearby Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown following the attack. His injuries were described last night as "not life threatening".

Gardai have so far been unable to interview him.
