Police have made an arrest following an altercation at Holy Cross College in Strabane, Co Tyrone.

It was reported that a mass brawl broke out in the canteen at the school in the Melmount Road area on Tuesday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said: "All parents of the pupils involved have been contacted. No serious injuries have been reported at this stage."

The arrested male was released back into the care of his parents.

Alliance Party member Stephen Donnelly, in a Facebook post, said: "Details remain unclear but I hope the situation in Strabane's Holy Cross College is under control and that staff and pupils are safe.

"Concerned to hear that pupils and staff have been injured. It sounds as though a fight broke out in the canteen and it escalated badly, with teachers and students being injured."

Principal Maria Doherty said 600 students were in the canteen at the time of the incident.

"We decided to call the PSNI because of the number of students we had in the canteen and social area at that time and the potential this situation had to escalate, so it was a supportive role."
