ALMOST €40m in government funds will go to the upgrade of a teacher training college.
Education Minister Ruairi Quinn gave the go-ahead for the work on St Patrick's Teacher Education College in Drumcondra, Dublin.
Up to 400 direct and indirect jobs will be created during its two years of construction.
"The funding I am making available to St Patrick's will mean the college is equipped to provide the best possible learning experience to our student teachers," said Mr Quinn yesterday.
The college was built to accommodate 800 but now caters for more than 2,000 students. When upgraded, it will be able to comfortably take in 2,500 students.
JJ Rhatigan & Co was awarded the construction contract after a competitive tender.
