The Dáil will today unite in support behind a motion aimed at protecting the post office network.

The bill, tabled by the Rural Alliance, is aimed at ensuring the network is provided with greater supports in order to prevent the closure of hundreds of post offices.

Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath yesterday said postmasters have "saved lives" by alerting emergency services in cases where elderly customers fail to collect post.

Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said the bill is essential in preventing the closure of hundreds of post offices.

"Right now, if we do nothing, we will lose 200 to 300 post offices over the next two-three years," Mr Healy-Rae added.

The bill itself was spearheaded by prominent postmaster Tom O'Callaghan.
