TAOISEACH Brian Cowen's close friend and constituency colleague John Moloney last night dismissed rumours he is retiring at the next general election.

The junior health minister said he was in hospital a fortnight ago for treatment for his sleep apnoea condition.

But he said rumours circulating in his Laois-Offaly constituency that he was retiring on health grounds were incorrect.

"I will be absolutely, definitely be standing as a Fianna Fail candidate. Clearly I want to show my support for the party and for Brian Cowen," he said.

Mr Moloney received medical treatment three years ago and was back in the Mater Hospital at the start of the month to be fitted with a breathing mask to help him sleep.

He said 5pc of the population suffer from the blocking of airwaves at night, making it difficult for them to sleep. "You put the mask on and it blows air in through your mouth."

Mr Moloney said he had heard of the rumours of his retirement and wanted them dispelled.

He also stressed his support for Mr Cowen amid the murmurings in the party over his leadership.
