TD defies party to back Seanad
A LABOUR Party TD says the Seanad is valuable as it has "stopped bad legislation" after the Dail passed bills that were flawed.
Defying the position of her party in Government, Joanna Tuffy is campaigning against the abolition of the Seanad in next month's referendum.
Although the Labour Party is campaigning for a Yes vote, Ms Tuffy is calling for the retention of the Seanad.
Writing in today's Irish Independent, the Dublin Mid-West TD says: "Not only has the Seanad delayed legislation, it has stopped bad legislation.
"Sections of bills have been deleted, amended or inserted by the Seanad and often this has been because the bill that passed the Dail was flawed," she said.
Ms Tuffy cites the example of the Personal Insolvency Act, 2012, which had 245 amendments made to it in the Seanad.
