A TAXI involved in a horrific road crash near Slane in Co Meath early today had been hijacked in Dublin a short time beforehand.

Two men in their twenties travelling in the Toyota Avensis taxi were thrown from the vehicle and suffered very serious injuries.

One man was later pronounced dead at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and the other man is being treated there for his injuries.

A couple travelling in a white van in the opposite direction on the N2 Collon to Slane Road at 12.10am today, were also injured.

Neither the man or woman is believed to have life threatening injuries.

It is understood that two men hijacked the Toyota Avensis taxi at Kilmainham in Dublin at 11.40pm.

The front seat passenger threatened the driver with a knife and demanded to be taken to a particular location.

The taxi man jumped out of his vehicle and the two men then sped off in it.

The taxi was involved in the fatal collision on a straight stretch of the road about three miles from Slane, just half an hour later.

Diversions are in place and the road is to remain closed today to allow for a technical examination at the scene.
