A taxi driver was assaulted and threatened at knife point before his car was hijacked.

The violent attacked happened at 1am this morning in the car park of the shopping centre at Palmerstown, Dublin.

The stolen car was driven from the scene in the direction of the N4 while the 58-year--old driver was treated for his injuries at Ballyfermot Garda Station

During a follow-up operation a 31-year-old suspect was arrested when armed members of the Regional Support Unit intercepted the taxi at a filling station near Maynooth, Co Kildare, shortly before 8am.

The man is being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Lucan Garda Station.
