Taxi driver avoids prison

A NIGERIAN taxi driver yesterday avoided a jail term over assaulting a passenger with a sweeping brush and a toy trailer, breaking the man's collar bone.

At Limerick Circuit Court, Okechukwu Utuke (44), of Dun na hInse, Ennis, Co Clare, walked free from court after the judge imposed a suspended two-year jail term on the father of three.

In the assault, Michael L'Estrange (48), of Gort na mBlath, Ennis, sustained a broken collar bone, which required key-hole surgery.

Utuke assaulted Mr L'Estrange in a row over a €15 taxi fare on April 25, 2010.
