Target dodges death in feud as shotgun fails

Eoghan McConnell and Tom Brady

Armed gardai have stepped up patrols around a midlands town after an escalating drugs feud resulted in an attempted shooting in a gym.

The intended target was in the sports club gym at the Axis business park in Tullamore, Co Offaly, on Thursday night when the gunman burst in.

The lone attacker, who was wearing a combat jacket and a balaclava, made two attempts to fire his single-barrelled shotgun but failed both times.

He fled from the gym into a 97 WH-registered Vauxhall car, which had been bought on Wednesday, and sped from the scene. Gardai later found the car burnt out near Kilbride cemetery in Tullamore.

Investigating officers think the incident could be linked to a feud between drugs gangs as a result of a "turf war" in the Midlands.

Some of those involved are known to have close links to members of Limerick crime gangs and the feud has escalated since the release of one man from prison.
