Taoiseach pays warm tribute to historian
TAOISEACH Brian Cowen yesterday led the tributes to the former president of Conradh na Gaeilge Nollaig O Gadhra who died aged 64 after a long illness.
Mr O Gadhra, was a founding member of Teilifis na Gaeilge, a journalist and a broadcaster. He was also a noted historian and wrote a number of books, including biographies of Gandhi, Edmund Ignatius Rice and a history of the first Dail.
Mr Cowen described him as a proud Irishman with a deep love of the Irish language and culture and a major historian who had done much to develop our understanding of modern Ireland.
A republican, he had believed firmly that our native language and history were central to our national identity. Mr O Gadhra lived in Connemara and is survived by his wife, Mairin, and three children. His funeral Mass takes place today at Furbo Parish Church in Connemara.
