Taoiseach coy about phone call
TAOISEACH Enda Kenny is keeping details of his conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about our €64bn bank debt under wraps, writes Michael Brennan.
He said that the joint statement issued after their weekend phone call spoke for itself.
"The conversation was amicable, comprehensive and resulted in a clear position in so far as this country is concerned in the view of Germany," he said.
It came after Independent TD Shane Ross had pleaded with him to reveal if he had got a commitment from Ms Merkel to write down Ireland's banking debt.
He said the Taoiseach should have taken the opportunity of "chewing the ear off the German Chancellor".
Mr Kenny said that negotiations on reducing Ireland's banking debt would continue following last week's summit.
