The Army’s bomb disposal unit has declared a ‘suspect device’ found outside an army barracks a hoax.

The Bomb Disposal Team was called in to examine the device, reported to be a flower pot, and gardai were asked to inform local residents that an operation was taking place near the barracks.

it is understood that no one was evacuated from the immediate area, though a number of residents were asked to remain in their homes until the all cear was given.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces told Independent.ie that the item was checked "remotely using the bomb disposal robot but was quickly deemed not to be a viable explosive device."

They confirmed that it was then handed over to gardai for examination.
