Super yacht visit is out of this World

BRIAN McDONALD

COME to Salthill and see The World. Or at least thousands of sightseers did yesterday.

The biggest yacht afloat docked in Galway Bay as the soaring temperatures drew massive crowds along the seafront.

Almost 200 metres long and 12 decks high, the luxury vessel dwarfed the handful of traditional hookers which sailed out from local ports to give it a proper West of Ireland welcome.

The World is the largest privately owned yacht, with 165 individual owners of residences on-board. These include 106 apartments, 19 studio apartments and 40 studios. At any one time it carries up to 300 residents and their guests.

Flying under the flag of the Bahamas, it weighs a reassuring 43,500 tons and has a crew of 250.

The visitors were ferried into Galway port where they spent a few hours taking in the sights in the City of the Tribes before going back to their floating home.
