We are in a lull before the winter storm. The evenings are shortening toward summer’s end. Overhead cloud never quite burnt away this year. It was a heavy summer pregnant with anxiety for what lies ahead.

The only good news since our last opinion poll — in a month dominated by climate, war, and the cost of living — came last week with what we might call the rebirth of former taoiseach Brian Cowen.
