Pull out the winter duvet and stock up on fire logs. Temperatures are set to drop below zero in some parts of the country this weekend, even though it is only mid-September.

Yesterday started off much cooler than previous days with temperatures as low as 6C, and Met Éireann has advised that ground temperatures are expected to plummet even lower during this weekend.

"Saturday night will turn rather cold with air temperatures falling to between 2C and 6C and ground temperatures dipping below zero in rural areas."

Summer is a distant memory with forecasters admitting it will feel "rather autumnal" during the daytime, although highs should reach between 12C and 15C.

Sunday will be the driest and warmest day of the weekend with highs between 15C and 17C.

Monday is also expected to be a dry day with sunny spells and temperatures getting as high as 17C.
