Marian Heffernan, who is married to world athletics champion Rob Heffernan, has been named the Philips Sports Manager of the Month.

Ms Heffernan, who helped coach her husband to gold in the 50km walk at the World Athletics Championship in Russia last month, has received the prestigious award as part of her efforts.

Marian is also an athlete, specifically an international 400m runner, and after competing at the 2012 London Olympics, she put her own career on gold in order to focus on her husband's dreams of gold medal glory.

She has been Rob's rock throughout his rise to fame, and is encouraging him to push himself even more as time goes on.

Speaking after he won the gold medal, a feat previously only achieved by Sonia O'Sullivan in 1995 and Eamonn Coghlan in 1983, she said;  “The aim for this year was that he'd get a result here and the fact that he has come back and got the gold is just phenomenal.

"It was like 10 years of his work, you know just the box being ticked.

“He was unlucky in London, he was unlucky in Barcelona twice.

"There's been a couple of competitions where he was fourth but I just knew he could do it, he just needed a good race.

“Nothing surprised me today, I knew if he was on, he was going to take it on."
