Students and staff evacuated from secondary school due to 'bomb scare'

Students and staff at a Co Roscommon secondary school were evacuated this morning due to a "bomb scare".

St Nathy's College in Ballaghaderreen, which has over 700 pupils, was forced to close this morning after gardai received reports that a device had been left on the premises.

A spokesperson for St Nathy's College said that a decision was made to close the school this morning to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

"Gardai informed us that they had received information that an alleged device had been left on the school premises. A number of Gardai attended the school where a detailed search was conducted and nothing was found. Investigations are ongoing by the Gardai," the statement said.

Local radio station Ocean FM reported this morning that parents received a text message at approximately 8.30am advising them to collect their children from the school.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
