Strike off as council defers bin contract

Anne-Marie Walsh Industry Correspondent

A STRIKE that would have left some 18,000 householders with uncollected rubbish from tomorrow has been deferred.

SIPTU last night agreed to suspend industrial action across the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area following progress at talks at the Labour Relations Commission.

In return for the workers' commitment to continue collecting bins, the council agreed to put off signing a contract with a private operator.

There were fears that the industrial action could spread as Fingal County Council and South Dublin County Council have also balloted in favour of action. The result of a ballot of binmen at Dublin City Council will be out today.

Talks will resume on Monday at the Labour Relations Commission.

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Councilplanned to appoint private waste-collection firm Panda from next week.
