Strawberries flying off shelves
PEOPLE just can't get enough of Irish strawberries during this weather.
Growers like Jimmy Kearns are struggling to keep up with demand in the sweltering heat.
Mr Kearns, who has been growing strawberries for over 45 years on his farm near Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, can't remember a season so hot.
These days he has a team of 60 people working from 6am until late trying to keep up with the demands of retail giants Musgraves and Dunnes Stores. They are picking in blistering heat that topped 27C yesterday on his farm.
Teagasc soft fruit specialist Dr Eamonn Kehoe said that up to now the season had been going very well and the conditions were perfect for growing soft fruits.
