Still missing: Ten unsolved cases
A designated Missing Persons Day will take place on the first Wednesday of every December, Justice Minister Alan Shatter announced yesterday.
Here we profile ten unsolved missing person cases.
Esra Uyrun, missing since February 23, 2011
Esra went missing from her home in the Ronanstown area of Dublin on at 7am.
Esra, aged 38 at the time, said she was going to the shops nearby.
Her car was found in the Bray Head car park.
Esra's sister Berna Fidan, who lives in London, has never given up hope of finding her and regularly travels to Ireland to seek help from the public.
When Berna put up a poster in a Neilstown chip shop in 2012, she was followed from the shop by the owner who handed her a set of car keys that had a photograph of Esra and her son Emin.
There has been no explanation as to how the keys arrived at the takeaway months after Esra disappeared.
Deirdre Jacob, missing since July 28, 1998
Deirdre is from Roseberry, Newbridge, Co Kildare. She was 18 at the time that she went missing and was last seen at 3.30pm walking towards her home.
Sionan O'Keefe, missing since March 9, 2013
Sionan was last seen in the Charlestown area of Finglas at around 6pm on the day she went missing. Sionan was14 when she went missing and she is from Clondalkin, Dublin.
Claire Boylan, missing since March 2, 2003
Claire is from the Terenure area of Dublin 6, and she was last seen in the city.
Fiona Pender, missing since August 23, 1996
Fiona was last seen at her flat at Church Street in Tullamore. At the time, the 25-year-old hairdresser and part-time model was seven months pregnant and had spent the previous day shopping for baby clothes with her mother in Tullamore.
Philip Cairns, missing since October 23, 1986
Philip left his secondary school, Colaiste Eanna, at 12.45pm to go to his home on Ballyroan Road, for lunch. He left the house at 1.30pm to walk back to school but he never arrived there. He was 13 at the time he went missing.
Monica Riordan, missing since December 20, 2011
Monica was last seen on CCTV on Sir John Rogersons Quay Dublin around 7pm on the day she went missing. She had walked along Macken Street from under the railway bridge towards the junction with Pearse Street and appeared to be disoriented and confused at the time. She was 39 when she went missing.
Andrejs Maisaks, missing since October 21, 2013
When last seen Andrejs, aged 32, was wearing a red and brown coloured light jacket, blue jeans and black shoes. His car was found in Kilcock, Co Kildare two days after he went missing. The father of one was depressed before he went missing because he was made redundant last winter, according to his mother Maya.
Priscilla Clarke, missing since May 3, 1988
Priscilla Clarke was last seen in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow. Her employer Lynda Kavanagh – who was seen horse-riding with an unidentified figure – was found dead two days later.
Aengus (Gussie) Shanahan, missing since February 14, 2000
Aengus was 20 years-old when he went missing. He is described as 5ft 11inches in height, of thin build, with a pale complexion, short fair hair and blue eyes. Aengus’ cousin Fr Aquinas Duffy, set up the website www.missing.ie to try to find him.
