State to use 'spare cash' on building spree

THE Department of Public Expenditure is seeking proposals for new state building projects.

The Government has signalled that it intends to expand plans for capital expenditure. It is understood that the move follows consultations at cabinet level on how best to use spare cash that has become available, including from the promissory note deal. The Government is also investigating projects to be financed by a new Strategic Infrastructural Fund, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Brendan Howlin's department has written to other departments seeking proposals for building projects. It is hoped that the projects will stimulate the economy and help to create jobs, especially in the struggling construction sector.
