State outlines €3.7m plan for west transport

MORE than €3.5m will be spent on projects aimed at getting people to walk, cycle or use public transport in the west.

The Government has announced a €3.7m investment package for Galway city, which includes building bus lanes, widening footpaths, upgrading the bus and train station and building bicycle stands.

However, €600,000 of that is to finish off projects already under construction.

Another €853,000 has been set aside to fund feasibility studies into making two of the city's bridges one-way only, identifying future bus and cycleways and tour bus parking.

The funding was announced by Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly yesterday under the regional cities' sustainable transport programme.
