A YOUNG Irish father who was assaulted during a stag weekend abroad has awakened from a coma.
Spanish police have arrested a man in connection with the attack on self-employed painter and decorator Eddie McMahon, from Finglas in Dublin.
The 29-year-old was one of a group of 24 who travelled to Alicante last week for the stag party of his friend, John Forrester (30).
The group had arrived on Thursday evening and were in the country for just three hours when the incident happened.
Mr Forrester's father Thomas, a former member of the Defence Forces, said they had decided to go out to a nightclub shortly after they arrived.
He said Mr McMahon was struck by an individual and fell, hitting his head on the ground.
Mr McMahon, a father of two young children, was rushed to hospital for treatment where he lapsed into a coma.
Yesterday, Mr Forrester said he had come out of the coma and had been quite agitated, possibly as a result of an injury to the brain.
The group of friends remained in Alicante over the weekend following the incident.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was offering consular assistance to the family.
