A crèche owner blamed a "nationwide childcare staff shortage crisis" for forcing her to shut down with only one week's notice to parents.

Sharon Byrne and her business partner ran Little Scholars crèche in a rented detached house in Warren Avenue, Carpenterstown, Dublin 15, for the past 22 years and parents were always happy with the quality of care provided.

The crèche closed down last Friday and parents were upset to suddenly have to find alternative childcare.

Ms Byrne said she found it "impossible" to find the staff numbers to stay in business.

"We are just as devastated as the parents," said Ms Byrne. "We gave parents a week's notice," she said, explaining they all had their deposits refunded.
