Sshh ... tight lid is kept on our Secret Service budget
STATE visits by US President Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth are thought to be the main reasons why funding of the Irish Secret Service is expected to rise by more than 70pc this year.
But there really is no way of knowing -- because it's a secret. The budget for undercover operations by Ireland's secret agents has jumped from €590,000 last year to €1m for the current year. The money is believed to pay informants in the fight against terrorism and crime.
Independent TD Thomas Pringle says the public should be told more. "It is not the practice to provide detailed information as to how the annual allocation will be spent," said the official reply.
