Sports editor Donaghy dies

ONE of the country's best known provincial sports journalists, Paul Donaghy, died suddenly at his Co Carlow home yesterday at the age of 71.

Educated at Rockwell College, Mr Donaghy went to Carlow from Dublin in 1961 to work as sports editor of the 'Nationalist & Leinster Times'.

He served as 'Nationalist' sports editor for 45 years and later became sports editor of the 'Carlow People'.

Predeceased in April 1990 by his wife Etna (nee O'Boyle), Mr Donaghy remarried and is survived by his wife Helen, son Paul, daughters Susan and Emer, and sister Pat.
