Splash of sunshine brings out 71,500

71,500 people attended the championships yesterday, well up on the same day last year and a welcome boost after a disappointing first day.

The high attendance included a large number of students and a surge in arrivals in the afternoon when the sun finally came out, organisers said.

Traffic was extremely heavy between Waterford and New Ross, with Bus Eireann reporting that the journey took two-and-a-quarter hours yesterday morning -- four times longer than normal.
