Snapshot of the past for Frances as she finds out more about 'The Common Noun' - her grandfather Sean
FRANCES Ui Chinneide (pictured above) from Baile Bhiocaire in west Kerry is the granddaughter of Sean O Dalaigh who was captured on camera by Dr Charles R Browne in 1897.
Mr O Dalaigh, who was better known locally as 'The Common Noun', was headmaster of Vicarstown National School.
He became 'The Master' at the school at the tender age of 18 and remained in the job for over 40 years, teaching generations of Dun Chaoin children the ins and outs of grammar.
As well as being a teacher, Mr O Dalaigh was also a collector of folklore and author and published two books in Irish, which are now held in the National Folklore Archive at UCD.
Mrs Ui Chinneide still lives in 'The Common Noun's' house in Baile Bhiocaire -- next door to the site of the old school.
Yesterday she carried a copy of the 1901 Census which showed that her grandfather had filled out his details in Irish.
