Snap decisions focus on best photographs
A PICTURE is worth a thousand words, the saying goes.
But some of the photographs entered into Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) annual awards by Irish Independent photographers tell an entire story.
Frank McGrath's picture of Ella Inverarity's first day at school (top right) shows her upset at being separated from her parents.
Meanwhile one of Steve Humphreys' entries into the prestigious photojournalism awards captured the moment (top) that Ruby Walsh and Imperial Rose took a tumble during the Galway Races.
This year, more than 1,600 photographs from a record 121 photographers are entered into the AIB-sponsored competition.
The international panel of judges includes Bride Rosney, Director of Communications at RTE, Ian Day, Picture Editor at The Yorkshire Post, and Jon Levy of Foto 8 in London.
"The competition continues to excel, and our overseas judges are again very impressed with the... calibre of Irish press photography," said Ray Mc Manus, President of the PPAI.
Among the Irish Independent entries are Frank McGrath's pictures of Cardinal Cathal Daly (right) welcoming Cardinal Sean Brady to the College of Cardinals in the Vatican, and Pope Benedict XV1 waving (left) to the crowds as he enters St Peters Basilica .
The winners will be announced at a gala banquet in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin, on February 15.
