Smoke alarm plan to save lives

Pat Flynn

Clare County Council has launched a Community Smoke Alarm Scheme to provide 10-year battery-operated smoke alarms to those who don't have the life-saving devices.

The local authority will oversee the installation of hundreds of smoke alarms across the county over the coming weeks. The initiative is part of the national Fire Service Change Programme.

The council is asking voluntary groups/volunteers and others who visit people in vulnerable households to identify homes where alarms are needed. Clare County Fire and Rescue Service will provide installation training and advise homeowners on the maintenance of the alarms. Applications are also being invited from those who are in a position to install the alarms themselves.
