Smashing pumpkins guaranteed

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend a Halloween themed event that features a spooky forest walk, live bands and the annual pumpkin weigh-in.

Growers will compete for the coveted title of 'heaviest pumpkin' during the Virginia Pumpkin Festival from October 25 to 29 in Co Cavan -- with a €6,000 prize up for grabs.

Last year the largest international pumpkin award went to the UK's Andrew Baggs with a pumpkin which weighed in at 1,320lbs.

Michael Byrne from Co Louth took the Irish title with his fleshy pumpkin weighing in at 895 lbs.

The Hothouse Flowers will play the Pumpkin Dome on October 27, while Trevor Smyth will perform with a live eight-piece band on Thursday night, October 25. Tickets are priced at €15.
