But MEP for Ireland East Mairead McGuinness certainly wasn't spooked at the seventh Virginia Pumpkin Festival in Co Cavan yesterday.

She was among 20,000 revellers who flocked to Virginia for the annual festival.

She wasn't afraid to offer a helping hand either as she assisted Larry O'Reilly of St Laserians Special Needs School in Carlow to shoulder the weight of the 256kg pumpkin, grown by pupils at the school.

The overall prize was taken by German Stephan Eckardt, who grew a pumpkin weighing 562kg, which Mairead clambered on top of at the event.
